I couldn't get iMovie 10 from the App Store, so I settled for iMovie 9. Getting the download straight from Apple is very easy (the iMovie 9.0.9 'update'; actually contains the full app), but installing it is a little more involved than a double click. If the iMovie icon is light purple and white, with a right-facing white camera, you have iMovie 10.0.6 or later for Yosemite. If you have Mavericks or Yosemite but still have iMovie ’11, you may be eligible for a free upgrade to iMovie 10. Check the Purchases tab of the App Store for more details.

The App Store should be showing you the last version of iMovie 10.x, that is compatible with your current system. For me the App Store is only showing iMovie 10.1.4, the most recent version, and this version requires OS X 10.11.2, so you cannot run it on your system.

The older iMovie 9.0.9 is not really compatible with the newer systems since Yosemite. It runs on Yosemite, but we have seen quite a few reports about crashes or minor glitches.

iMovie 9.x is no longer sold from the AppStore. If you already own it, you can use this updater to update to the last version of iMovie '11, version 9.0.9: https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1574?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
